They say one man’s trash is another man’s treasure, and in this couple’s case, Lucy the Raccoon’s “trash” is most certainly their treasure.
A man named Neil took his unsuspecting girlfriend, Katie, to the Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle, Washington, on what Katie thought was a normal day date to watch a trained raccoon sort recyclable garbage and trash. Little did she know, her life was about to change dramatically.
When Lucy picked up a piece of cardboard and showed it to the couple, Katie couldn’t believe her eyes. The sign read, “Will you marry me?”
News reporters clarified that it wasn’t actually Lucy asking Katie to marry her; it was her boyfriend, Neil (which, thank you for the clarification, I guess). In the video, you can hear Katie squealing, “What?! Is this happening?!!”
Neil then got down on one knee and proposed to his girlfriend.
Katie told KCPQ Seattle, “This is awesome, like, I’m watching this raccoon sort trash. This is great! And then the next thing I know, she was sorting ‘recycle’ and ‘trash.’ Then she just holds up the sign, and I was like, ‘Oh!’”
Neil apparently worked with the zoo to set up the entire thing, and Katie admitted she had zero idea that the proposal was going to happen. She even showed off her beautiful ring to reporters, and of course she said yes!
Congrats to the happy couple! What an incredibly unique proposal.
