A self-described Dutch “positivity trainer” has filed a legal petition asking to change his age to improve his online dating prospects.
The BBC reports that 69-year-old Emile Ratelband appeared before a judge requesting to legally move his birthday from March 11, 1949, to March 11, 1969, effectively making him 20 years younger.
Emile argued his case in court before a panel of judges, stating that he believes he’s been discriminated against due to his age. Specifically, he said that being 69 has hurt his employment chances and his dating prospects on the online dating app Tinder.
“When I’m 69, I am limited. If I’m 49, then I can buy a new house, drive a different car. I can take up more work,” he said. “When I’m on Tinder and it says I’m 69, I don’t get an answer. When I’m 49, with the face I have, I will be in a luxurious position.”
Emile, who works as a “media personality and motivational guru,” also cited evidence from his doctors, who have apparently said he has the body of a 45-year-old man. The self-described “young god” controversially likened legally changing his age to a name change or gender change, which are commonly granted in the cases of people who are transgender.
“We live in a time when you can change your name and change your gender. Why can’t I decide my own age?” he said.
